In this Master programme, young engineers will receive a comprehensive education to prepare them for careers in the field of applied research and development.The course is closely linked to concrete applied research and development projects and is made up of in-depth modules which are coordinated with each of the selected projects. Thus, the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Media Technology and Computer Science bridges applied research and development to industrial practice. The subject-specific orientation depends on the project topic and courses selected. Course instructors offer project topics relevant to their own applied research and development activities, and the instructor will tailor each course to combine relevant subject matter from the project. In this programme, we strive to provide students with a progressive scientific qualification, within which a publishable academic work should be completed. Each student will be supervised by a professor in a research project which lasts the entire length of the programme.

The Master programme is offered in cooperation with the Universities of Amberg-Weiden, Augsburg, Deggendorf, Ingolstadt, Munich, Nuremberg and Regensburg. Thus, there is a diverse range of research topics and courses available and each student has the opportunity to go beyond the boundaries of the university context and establish contacts with research institutes as well as firms valuable for their later professional activities.

Learning objectives and prospects

Learning Objectives:

The goal of the course is, on the one hand, to broaden the students’ technical knowledge through the application-oriented research and development assignment. On the other hand, students gain the ability to carry out academic work in the areas of project management, research, applying for funding, drawing up a research proposal, presenting results and in the completion of a publishable scientific paper. In this way, students develop the competence to carry out technical-academic projects and tasks.

Prospects:

A graduate of this Master programme is the ideal candidate for occupations in research and development departments as well as in innovation management in both small and medium-sized firms. Through the 18-month academic work, graduates will have gained the following competencies:

  • Ability to complete technical-academic projects and tasks
  • Project management skills from the project proposal stage to realisation and documentation
  • Applying for funding and grants at the national as well as the international level
  • Presenting results in journals as well as at conferences and events

Doctoral Opportunities:

  • The academic title, “Master of Science” fullfills the prerequisite for a possible promotion.
