Dr. Tobias Berthold receives Best Paper Award and is invited to lecture
at the world’s premier conference on microelectronics reliability

Tobias Berthold’s paper titled “Protective nanometer films for reliable Cu-Cu connections” has won the Best Paper Award at the 28th European Symposium on Reliability of Electron Devices, Failure Physics and Analysis (ESREF 2017). The symposium took place at the end of September in Bordeaux, France, and is Europe’s most significant conference in this field. The paper has been co-authored by the DIT professors Dr. Werner Frammelsberger and Dr. Günther Benstetter and DIT graduate Manuel Bogner, as well as by Prof. Dr. Rosana Rodriguez and Dr. Montserrat Náfria, both researchers at the Autonomous University in Barcelona.

By receiving the Best Paper Award, Tobias Berthold will have the honor of presenting his paper in an invited lecture at next year’s IEEE International Reliability Physics Symposium (IRPS), which will be held in San Francisco in March. The IRPS is the world’s premier conference on microelectronics reliability. The award and the included invitation are very prestigious distinctions in this field on an international scale and have a high impact in the scientific community.

Tobias Berthold’s doctoral thesis honoured with highest distinction

There is yet another DIT doctoral student who has graduated with highest honours this year. Tobias Berthold’s doctoral thesis titled “Advanced nanoscale characterization concepts for copper interconnection technologies” received the highest possible mark “cum laude” from the Autonomous University in Barcelona (UAB), which corresponds to the German “summa cum laude”. Moreover, he has earned the International Doctor Research Award from UAB.

In his doctoral project, Tobias Berthold has developed new characterization methods for the high-resolution analysis of nanoscale copper surface oxidation during bonding. He investigated possible passivation layers, thereby developing characterization methods for determining the thermal stability of these protective layers on a nanometer scale. On the DIT side, his doctoral project was supervised by Prof. Dr. Günther Benstetter. From now on, Tobias Berthold will engage in interconnect process development at a Regensburg-based lighting technology group.

Thesis of DIT doctoral student honoured
with highest distinction summa cum laude

After only 3 years of working on his dissertation titled “Spatiotemporal modelling for renewable distributed energy generation planning for municipalities”, Luis Ramirez Camargo has just graduated with summa cum laude honours from the Viennese University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU). On the DIT side, his doctoral project was supervised by Wolfgang Dorner, professor at the Faculty of Electrical, Media and Computer Engineering.

At the moment, Dr. Ramirez Camargo is engaged in the research project “INCREASing renewable Energy penetration in industrial production and grid integration through optimized CHP energy dispatch scheduling and demand side management” undertaken at Technology Campus Freyung in cooperation with the Chilean university Pontifica Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. This project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

DIT PhD student wins prize for best abstract at Scottish university

DIT graduate Zeljko Loncaric, who is currently doing his PhD within the framework of a cooperation between DIT and the University of the West of Schotland (UWS) in Paisley near Glasgow, had the honour of being awarded the prize for best abstract. At this year’s Student Research Conference, a jury from UWS’ School of Business and Enterprise deemed his abstract titled „Experimental Thinking Start-Ups – An Experimental-Driven Business Innovation Model“ this year’s best. On the occasion of the annual conference, around 100 doctoral students from Scotland and all over the world, who are being supervised by professors at UWS, reported on their research projects in the form of posters and oral presentations.
Zeljko’s supervisor at DIT is Peter Schmieder from the Faculty of Applied Economics (School of Management). Once a student of Strategic and International Management as well as Media Technology at Deggendorf, he has embarked on his PhD journey with a research project on innovation strategies in start-ups in 2016.

UWS and DIT sign collaboration agreement

DIT’s Vice President for Research and Knowledge Transfer, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Grzemba (left), and UWS‘s Vice Principal (Research & Enterprise), Prof. Dr. Ehsan Mesbahi (right), have signed an updated joint PhD collaboration agreement. The former agreement had been running for five years since 2011. In light of the positive experiences with currently four students under supervision, the agreement was signed for another five years. Prof. Grzemba and Prof. Mesbahi have articulated their mutual interest in further, various kinds of cooperations.

PhD Alumnus to become youngest professor in DIT’s history

With the start of the current summer term, Martin Schramm, a former PhD candidate at Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT), was appointed as a professor for embedded IT security and mathematics to the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Media Technology. In January 2017, he successfully defended his PhD thesis with the title „Conceptual Design, Modelling and Implementation of an Adaptable Cryptographic Engine for Field Programmable Logic" at the University of Limerick in Ireland.

PhD Student wins Best Presentation Award on DIT’s Research Day

On the occasion of the annual Research Day (Tag der Forschung) which took place on March 9th 2017, young engineers at Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT) presented their research projects to an audience of academics and entrepreneurs.Research projects were presented in the form of posters and ten-minute talks. The ten talks were evaluated by a jury according to scientific standards and the understandability for a non-expert audience.

We would like to express our congratulations to Gabriel Herl, one of the four PhD candidates who shared insights into their projects. He had the honour to receive this year’s Best Presentation Award for the talk he delivered on the “Fusion of several CT images for improving scan quality”. Gabriel is a research associate at the Fraunhofer Application Centre ‘CT in Measurement Technology’.

The award, a sophisticatedly designed and manufactured semi-transparent glass cylinder, was developed by Lisa-Marie Mühl, a design class student at Glasfachschule Zwiesel.

Most Distinguished International Publication as a Young Researcher
2015/2016 by Luis Ramirez

On the occasion of DIT's annual academic celebration, the Dies academicus, graduate engineer Luis Ramirez Camargo was awarded for the “Most Distinguished International Publication as a Young Researcher in 2015/2016”. Luis received the award from DIT’s President, Prof. Dr. Peter Sperber, and the Vice-President of Applied Research & Knowledge Transfer, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Grzemba, for his article “Comparison of Satellite Imagery Based Data, Reanalysis Data and Statistical Methods for Mapping Global Solar Radiation in the Lerma Valley (Salta, Argentina)”, co-authored by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Dorner (DIT) and published in Renewable Energy in 2016 (Vol. 99, pp. 57–68).

The journal is the official publication of the World Renewable Energy Network (WREN) and is ranked among the ten internationally most important journals in the field of green and sustainable energy and technology. The article is a result of a cooperation with researchers at the Non-Conventional Energy Resources Investigation Institute (INENCO) of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) at the National University of Salta, Argentina.

Luis is a research associate at the Technology Campus in Freyung and a PhD candidate at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Günter Benstetter was awarded for the “Most Distinguished International Publication as a Senior Researcher in 2015/2016. He received the award for the article „Surface degeneration of W crystal irradiated with low-energy hydrogen ions“, published together with Hongyu Fan, Yuwei You, Weiyuan Ni, Qi Yang, Lu Liu, Dongping Liu und Changsong Liu (2016) in Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group, Article number 23738). Scientific Reports is one of the most important and distinguished multidisciplinary open access journals worldwide.
