The Fraunhofer Application Center for CT in Metrology (CTMT) located at the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT) has been involved in the field of industrial X-Ray computed tomography (CT) for many years.

Complex workpieces often cannot be measured in a nondestructive manner using conventional measuring systems, such as tactile or optical coordinate measuring machines. The properties of X-rays make it possible for CT to characterise materials nondestructively and to test workpieces for defects (cracks, blowholes) or inner and outer geometrical features. The high information density of materials and workpieces provided by CT-data makes this powerful imaging digitisation tool increasingly indispensable for the industry in the areas of fast product development and integrated quality management. For materials selection, initial sampling and production monitoring as well as the recycling of raw materials CT is already playing a crucial role.

Currently, five CT-systems are available for Professor Hiller’s team. An additional machine will be installed in the course of 2019. The main objectives of the application center scientists consist of research activities in the field of CT metrology, the implementation of industrial projects and the practical education of students at the DIT through lectures and internships. Furthermore, the Fraunhofer CTMT constantly offers a diverse range of interesting graduation theses as well as opportunities for employment as research assistants.
