An interim semester means that a student is allowed to take a semester off (6 months) while remaining matriculated at the university.

Reasons for taking a sabbatical according to the law (Art. 48 Abs. 2 Satz 1 BayHschG) are in particular:

  • An officially confirmed medical condition or illness that keeps the individual from following a normal course of study
  • Maternity leave and/or parental leave directly before and after childbirth
  • Completion of a voluntary internship that is relevant to the course of studies but not required within the normal programme of study
  • Compulsory military service

Other reasons may be given to be closely evaluated as individual cases.
Financial difficulties are normally not valid as an important reason.

This request for a sabbatical in the winter semester (starting October) must be submitted to the Centre for Studies by 15th October, for a sabbatical in the summer semester (starting March) applications must be received by the 31st March.
