DIT students win Innovation Prize in a global start-up business competition in United Arab Emirates

Under the leadership of their University Lecturer Jack Romero and the support of Marketing evangelist Georg Nietsch, students Sarah Ebner and Katharina Braig secured a price in the category of International Innovation with their Business project; i-ventus (Latin for Power Wind).

Organised by the American University of Sharjah and under the patronage of HRH Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Sovereign Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, the business competition had attracted a high number of international and local industries and investors.

 

iventusThe aims of the competition were the identification of the best entries in categories like “Business idea”, “presentation”, “student talents” and “Innovation” amongst the 225 qualifying international University Teams with focus on High Technology and Science based industries, such as Artificial Intelligence.

The winning Team of Deggendorf Institute of Technology, led by lecturer Jack Romero, submitted his proposed project, i-ventus, in the Renewable Energy sector to the competition Board. Jack’s Team presented the business idea in Sharjah among another tough 16 Global Finalists coming from key universities in the United States, Sweden, China, India and other countries.

The winning Innovation project “i-ventus” was well presented and is truly innovative in the world’s need for more affordable and technically refined renewable energy technology. A Vertical Wind Turbine using the Savonius effect, designed specifically for domestic use (connect to battery or national grid) operates in wind speeds as little as 4.3 mph up to 156 mph. It incorporates best of high quality material (aircraft grade aluminium, stainless steel, carbon fibre) with no or low maintenance (more robust than solar panels, less moving parts). No harm to birds or wildlife, runs 24/7 and most of all without producing any noise pollution. It is in TRL 6 stage. Dimensions: 2m-2,5m high/1m-2,2m wide. Capacities are: 600W, 1kW, 2kW, 10kW, 300kW.i ventus2

During their 3 day stay in the UAE, the team was advised and supported by Munich based sales and marketing specialist Mr Georg Nietsch who worked tirelessly offering mentoring and ensuring compliance, uniqueness of presentations and networking. Undergraduate student Sarah and Postgraduate student Katharina braved tough public presentations in English to an international auditorium, tested their public speaking skills to the limits, as well as their business acumen and understanding of the technical, environmental and geopolitical challenges facing the Renewable Energy Industry globally.
