Prof. Brian E. Dixon, PhD, MPA, is Director of the Clem McDonald Center for Biomedical Informatics at the [Regenstrief Institute](https://www.regenstrief.org/) in Indianapolis — one of the longest-standing informatics research centres in the United States — a role he has held since December 2024. He also directs the joint public health informatics programme of the Regenstrief Institute and the [Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health](https://fairbanks.indianapolis.iu.edu/), where he is Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management.

His research applies informatics methods and tools to improve population health in clinical as well as public health organisations. It leverages clinical and administrative data in electronic health records to measure population health, better understand the determinants of health, examine how information flows through the health system, and improve outcomes for individuals and populations. His work on disease surveillance — including public health data dashboards for COVID-19, syphilis and diabetes — has earned national recognition in the United States.

Prof. Dixon is the editor of the textbooks Public Health Informatics and Information Systems and Clinical Informatics Study Guide, and of Health Information Exchange, which received the Book of the Year award of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI), HIMSS and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), and is an Affiliated Scientist with the Center for Health Information and Communication of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He teaches informatics to future clinical and public health leaders and mentors early-career informatics professionals.

A long-standing friend of DigiHealthDay, Prof. Dixon delivered a keynote on Applied Public Health Informatics in 2020 and an impulse talk in 2021, and taught a public health informatics webinar series for the DigiHealthDay community. His current focus is the Learning Public Health System — how data, informatics and artificial intelligence can turn surveillance into continuous cycles of observation, interpretation, action and learning.
